The grade 8 Family Studies class is a mixture of theory and laboratory work. The course itself is broken into 5 units which will be covered throughout the year. The first few weeks of the term will focus mainly on theory work and as the term progresses laboratory classes will introduced.
Outcome 1: Students will implement food processes.
Goal: Students will work safely, both independently and collaboratively, in the kitchen when preparing foods from scratch.
Outcome 2: Students will create various food products for various audiences and purposes.
Goal: Students will be able to plan and prepare, both individually and collaboratively, foods for a variety of purposes.
Outcome 3: Students will be expected to analyse the impact of nutrients on personal health and well-being.
Goal: Students will have an understanding of how individual nutrients are used by their bodies and how to use meal planning to know if they are getting too much or not enough of them in their diet.
Outcome 4: Students will analyse nutrition messages for reliability, accuracy, validity and bias.
Goal: Students will be able to access a reliable resources, to access accurate nutritional information needed to support their health.
Outcome 5: Students will evaluate the impact of local and global food practices on personal choices.
Goals: Students will have an understanding of food security/insecurity, locally and globally.
Students will know how marketing plays a role on our food choices.
The assessments for this course include assignments, quizzes, tests, group work, presentations, labs, and projects. Rubrics will be used often to let students know at the beginning what the expectations are and how they will be evaluated. These assessments will be both formal and informal and will at all times reflect the fact that our students have different learning styles and abilities. Marks can be viewed on PowerSchool and will be updated on a regular basis.
***Just a reminder that students only have this course for one two hour block within the two week cycle, so items may not appear as frequently as in other courses. Depending on holidays and professional development days there may be longer periods of time between classes.
